Essential knowledge
Before you fly
ESTA or Visa? Most visitors from the UK and EU qualify for ESTA ($21, valid 2 years). Apply at least 72 hours before departure.
Getting around. Renting a car is often essential outside cities. Book early — last-minute rental rates in summer can triple.
National Park passes. The America the Beautiful pass ($80/year) covers entry to all 400+ national park sites. Worth it for any trip over 10 days.
Tipping culture. 18–20% at restaurants is standard. Budget for it — it changes your daily spend more than most guide books acknowledge.
